I want to start by congratulating you on your resolve to lose weight. Green smoothies can certainly help you do this.
Massive Weight Loss With Green Smoothies
Just about every green smoothie recipe on this website will promote weight loss. There isn’t one particular fruit or vegetable that magically sheds pounds more than any other.
The important thing when making weight loss smoothies is to keep it healthy – dairy-free (no yogurt/milk) and no added sugars (honey/agave).
Using green smoothies as a meal-replacement option is the key strategy I use and recommend for people who want to lose weight. Start by replacing one meal each day with a green smoothie.
However, I don’t recommend replacing all meals with a green smoothie for longer than 10 days at a time.
I recommend following a meal plan that includes both green smoothies, and healthy, whole foods.
Your Focus Shouldn’t Just Be On Green Smoothies, Though
As you know, weight loss is more than just what you eat (or don’t eat). The rest of your diet and exercise also play an important role.
While green smoothies can certainly help you lose weight, they aren’t the only thing you should change about your diet.
Work on changing the rest of your diet. A plant-based, whole foods diet is naturally lower in calories. It’s nearly impossible to overeat, and you’ll feel full and satisfied.
By the way, when I say “plant-based”, I’m not necessarily referring to a vegan diet.

Don’t Do A Smoothie-Only Diet
To answer your other question, I do not recommend going on a green smoothie-only diet long term. You can read more about my stance on smoothie and juice diets here.
As I said, you can follow a green smoothie cleanse for up to 10 days. But drinking nothing but green smoothies should not be maintained over the long term. Use a cleanse to transition to a healthier diet.
I recommend having a green smoothie for breakfast and/or lunch. Choose a healthy fruit and/or veggie snacks (as well as nuts) with a healthy, whole foods dinner.
And start moving your body. I don’t expect you to start running 5Ks tomorrow, but start by committing to a 10 minute walk every day and go from there.
Massive Weight Loss Inspirations
A few years ago, I asked my readers to send me stories about how green smoothies changed their lives. These stories were awe-inspiring. In fact, I received a handful from people for whom green smoothies lead to, or contributed to, a 100+ pound weight loss.

1) James B. – Glen Burnie, Maryland, USA – 116 Pound Weight Loss
James lost an incredible 116 pounds in less than a year, and he reports that his blood glucose is no longer in the diabetic range.

2) Gina Silvestri – Vancouver, BC, Canada – 150 Pound Weight Loss
Gina lost an astonishing 150 pounds and successfully addressed seventeen health issues.

Jeff’s incredible weight loss story all but squashes any excuse you might have for not getting on the green smoothie bandwagon.
Here’s a guy who weighed almost 400 pounds, had high triglycerides, and high cholesterol. He had all of the other health issues that go along with obesity…that is, until he started drinking green smoothies and changing his life!
“I started drinking green smoothies on March 16, 2012. At the time, I weighed 392 pounds. I have lost 108 pounds in nine months [as of January 2013]. My triglycerides went from 465 down to 171! My cholesterol dropped from 249 down to 188!
I drink about 36 ounces of green smoothie per day (three 12-ounce glasses), made in my Magic Bullet. I eat about four to five times a day. I drink green smoothies in the morning. 4) Jendayi Nanyamka – Brooklyn, NY, USA – 100+ Pound Weight Loss

Now doesn’t that inspire you to lose a ton of weight? You can do this.
But you need a plan, and the right strategies, and a support system that cheers you on every step of the way.
You can either make weight loss a “someday goal”, or you can make it a “today goal”.
Attempting yet another fad diet will give you more of the same results – short term weight loss, but then you’ll gain it all back when you stop dieting.
Instead, you can learn new habits and completely change your relationship to food, while dramatically transforming your body.
