Apple cider vinegar (ACV) has a long history of promoting good health and alleviating health problems. ACV tonics have become popular again, but it took me a long time before I got around to drinking them. And once I did, it quickly became a daily habit!
I start every morning with a warm apple cider vinegar tonic. The health benefits are numerous. It supports weight loss and immune function. It also aids in digestion. In fact, I feel it when I don’t drink mine every day.
Sometimes I even have a second cup later in the day – especially on cold winter days when everybody around me is coughing and sniffling!
I love my apple cider vinegar tonic so much that I encourage my green smoothie cleanse participants to drink it as well.
What Do Apple Cider Vinegar Tonics Taste Like
Apple cider vinegar tonics are made with apple cider vinegar (ACV), honey (optional), lemon, ginger, and cinnamon. Some people also add turmeric, fresh herbs like rosemary, and cayenne pepper flakes.
These tonics will have a definite vinegar taste that is toned down by the sweet honey and other flavors (like ginger). My recipe below tastes like a combination of apple cider, vinegar, and lemon as I don’t add honey.
Most people drink their ACV tonics warm, but you can have it cold if you want. Some people have a hard time drinking apple cider vinegar.
Why You Should Use This Health-Promoting Tonic Every Day
So why is apple cider vinegar so good for you?
Aids In Weight Loss: You might have heard that apple cider vinegar can help you lose weight. It’s not a “miracle” weight loss tonic, but it can definitely boost your weight loss efforts.
ACV contains acetic acid, which suppresses your appetite. It also increases your metabolism and reduces water retention. There is some speculation that apple cider vinegar may limit the digestion of starch, which could reduce calorie intake.
My personal experience with drinking a daily ACV tonic confirms its weight loss boosting effects. I notice that it’s easier for me to lose weight when I drink my daily tonic. Weight loss plateaus would be shorter in duration, and my body would need less time to rest before losing additional weight.
I’d recommend trying ACV if you are prone to weight loss plateaus, or if you want to boost a plant-based diet for weight loss.
Aids In Digestion: Lemon encourages the liver to produce quality bile which is required for digestion. Additionally, the vitamin C in fresh lemon juice helps the liver to produce A compound called glutathione, which aids in cleansing and regenerating the liver.
Boosts the Immune System: Lemons are packed full of Vitamin C, which is great for fighting colds and combating stress. They contain saponins, which have antimicrobial properties. Lemon juice also reduces phlegm production by the body.
Lemons are high in potassium which helps to control blood pressure and it stimulates brain and nerve function.
Apple cider vinegar may also improve insulin sensitivity in people with type 2 diabetes.
Not All Apple Cider Vinegars Are Good For You, Though
Not all apple cider vinegars are created equal. Make sure that you only buy ACV that is labeled as “unpasteurized”, “unfiltered”, and contains the “mother.” The brand that I buy is Bragg.
The “mother” is a collection of proteins, enzymes, and friendly bacteria that look like cloudy strands of thread on the bottom of the vinegar bottle. If you are buying apple cider vinegar at a store and there is no “sludge” at the bottom, then it won’t do you any good.
Make sure you give the bottle a good shake before making a tonic so that you mix the “mother” around. That way, you’ll get a little in every glass.
Apple Cider Vinegar Tonic Recipe
- 10 ounces warm water
- 1-2 tablespoon/s apple cider vinegar
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
- 1/4 teaspoon ginger, grated (optional)
- 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon (optional)
Add all of the ingredients to warmed water. Do not use boiling water as it will destroy the vitamin C in the lemon juice.
Add optional fresh ginger and cinnamon.
Stir and enjoy.
You can enjoy this cold if you prefer.
NOTE: I do not consume the actual piece of ginger.
