Why Grapefruit Makes This Smoothie Rock!

Grapefruits are an excellent source of vitamin A (as beta-carotene) and vitamin C, with the average grapefruit providing up to 83% RDA of vitamin C.

Grapefruits are water-rich which helps facilitate cleansing and detox. Diets high in citrus fruits, such as grapefruits, have been shown to lower the risk of esophageal, oral and stomach cancers.

Powerful antioxidants in grapefruits may lower risk for heart disease. A 12-week study at the Scripps Clinic in San Diego lead by Dr. Ken Fujioka showed that eating one half grapefruit before meals helped facilitate weight loss due to a compound in the fruit itself.

Findings published in the February 2006 issue of the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry suggested that eating one grapefruit per day may significantly lower cholesterol levels for patients who were not responding to cholesterol-lowering medications.

Caution: Grapefruits contain compounds that interfere with certain medications such as statin drugs like Lipitor and Zocor. If you are on any medications, please consult with your doctor or pharmacist before consuming grapefruit.

What Makes This The Perfect Detox Smoothie?

You already know why grapefruit is the star of this recipe. But what makes this the ultimate detox?

Citrus Fruits

The ultimate cleansing fruits include citrus (orange, grapefruit, lemon, and lime).

They are water-rich, and full of fiber. They are high in antioxidants.

Kale & Dandelion Greens

Spinach is good, but if you really want to boost he cleansing abilities of this green smoothie, upgrade to kale or dandelion greens.

Leafy greens – especially kale and dandelion – are rich in minerals, and contain antioxidant compounds that may protect against disease.

Most experts suggest that dandelion greens are the ultimate detox green, claiming that they are particularly useful for supporting kidney and liver function.

Ginger

Fresh ginger stimulates your digestive tract and speeds up digestion. It can also help fight nausea. Fresh ginger can be grated into a green smoothie or added to fresh juices, and may help move things along in your digestive tract if you’re regretting what you ate.

Organic Ingredients

As much as possible, choose organic fruits and vegetables when making your green smoothies.

Conventional produce may contain pesticide residues. Some of the fruits and vegetables highest in pesticide residues according to the Environmental Working Group’s annual “Dirty Dozen” list included strawberries, apples, stone fruit (peaches, nectarines, cherries), and grapes, as well as leafy greens like spinach and kale.

Also, many fruits are treated with fungicides to prevent mold and extend shelf life, too. While these chemical treatments are generally considered safe, many people prefer to buy fruit that hasn’t been treated, or coated in wax to enhance appearance.
