We are in the midst of winter when the New Moon enters the sign of Aquarius.
It’s a time to set intentions about what we love and are passionate about.
This is also around the time of Imbolc, the mid-point between the Winter Solstice (Yule) and the Spring Equinox (Ostara).
During this time, I find myself future-focused, longing for spring and sunshine. It’s when my “homesickness” for spring is felt most acutely.
The winter quiet also turns us inward to our own thoughts. This particular new moon is the best time to mine the subconscious and consider even the most unconventional ideas and solutions.
One of the ways I cope with the long northeastern winters is to commit to making time each day to do something creative – to connect to my passions and explore the unconventional, creative side of myself (Aquarius just happens to be my sun sign!)
New Moon In Aquarius Correspondences
Element: Air (Despite being “The Water Bearer”, Aquarius is indeed an air sign).
Season: Winter (The Aquarius New Moon occurs while the sun is also in the sign of Aquarius – January 20 – February 18, typically).
This is the new moon closest to Imbolc.
Candle Color: Blue, purple, violet.
Crystals/Stones: Black moonstone (a good stone to work with during the new moon), amethyst, lapis lazuli, malachite, labradorite, black tourmaline, auquamarine.
Herbs/Tea: Mint, sage, mugwort, licorice root.
This is a good time to work with a mugwort dream pillow. Simply place a sachet or small pillow filled with dried mugwort leaves and flowers under your pillow. Keep a dream journal and record your dreams. What insights, solutions, or unconventional ideas are your dreams giving you?
Essential Oils/Incense: Lavender, pine, mugwort (you can easily make a mugwort smudge stick using just the flowers of this plant).
Plants: Nothing is growing in my snow-covered garden at the time of the Aquarius new moon. If we’ve had a warm February, I’ll poke around the leaf litter looking for a glimpse of green shoots just emerging – a promise of spring that is still nearly three months away.
During the Aquarius Full Moon (Late July to Early mid-August), my garden is at it’s peak. I will use herbs I’ve harvested during the Aquarius full moon during my new moon rituals.
Working with last year’s dried herbs while focusing on the year to come helps me draw upon past experience and wisdom while also exploring new ideas and approaches.
Animal: Bird – particularly birds of prey (Eagle, hawk, owl – which are all active during this time of the year).
Other Earth Magick Items: Other items I might work with during New Moon in Aquarius rituals include snow/ice, evergreen needles, and pine cones.
New Moon In Aquarius Ritual
Here are some simple rituals that you can do under the Aquarius New Moon:
1) Tarot Under An Aquarian New Moon
If you work with tarot, pull The Star (XVII) from your favorite tarot deck and reflect on how the archetype of The Star is playing out in your life right now.
Ultimately, this card represents self expression, optimism, and revelation – but you have to be willing to keep your eyes focused on the light.
While you might be in the dark of winter right now, the days are lengthening and the light is returning. Keep your focus lightward!
The Suit of Swords are associated with the element of Air, which is a great suit to work with when the moon is in air signs.

2) Honor The Element Of Air
One tiny ritual that Tracy and I often do during our daily Magick Morning ritual is to use a feather (it can also be a piece of paper or a leaf) and fan air toward you while you say (out loud) what you want to manifest in your life.
Additionally, you can waft the air away from you as you say (out loud) what you wish to release in your life.
